Make it Bigger / Make it Smaller
We tend to assume that technology products are all getting smaller. Not so. These two new products are aimed at adjusting the size of a current product. One is getting smaller but the other is going for big.
First is a new cell phone that is made bigger for older users. Next is a new PC that is made smaller for traveling business people.
The cell phone is from Vodafone. It is designed with middle-aged and older people in mind. It is a plain old phone. It does not take pictures, access the web, or play games. It is just a phone with slightly larger than average buttons and a larger screen than most cell phones. When the battery runs low, rather than displaying a tiny icon somewhere, the screen displays the message “Please charge.” When a message comes in, a light flashes. Simple enough. In fact, the phone, which is not yet available in the US, is called the Vodafone Simply.
With cellular markets in Western Europe and Japan quite saturated, Vodafone is aiming at one of the few places left to grow their market. After surveying 5,000 Europeans between the ages of 35 and 55 about what they wanted in a cell phone, they were shocked that many didn’t even know their cell phone numbers, and how to use basic functions. Hence, the Vodafone simply. For additional information see
here. Considering the size of the Baby boomer population, I don’t expect it will be long before similar phones are available here. Not that you will want one, of course. I am sure you are much too young.
As opposed to making a device larger, a San Francisco startup called OQO has developed a full-featured Windows XP PC that is small enough to carry in a purse or pocket. Called Model 01, the PC is only 4.9 inches long, 3.4 inches wide and .9 inches thick. It weighs only 14 ounces. While they didn’t get very creative with the model name, they have come up with what some say is the very first truly useful pocket size PC. It has a complete thumb keyboard with mouse buttons and a digital pen. Able to connect to peripherals including monitors, projectors, optional drives, printers and speakers, this little device is perfect for traveling business people who need to do presentations on the road.
The Model 01 can also connect to wireless networks with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. It comes with Microsoft Windows XP either Home Edition or Professional. The only complaint I have heard is that the keyboard is quite small making it impractical for a lot of typing. However, it can be connected to a docking station.
Whether you are looking to downsize or upsize, there are new products out there for you.
